A male and female suspect were recently arrested after a high-speed chase on Interstate 680 following apparent theft at an East Bay grocery store.
On Wednesday of last week Pleasanton police were patrolling the Safeway on Bernal Avenue when they noticed suspicious activity. They spotted a man running out of the Safeway with two full baskets before jumping into an orange Chevrolet Cavalier with the second suspect.
Officers immediately attempted to stop the couple, but they continued north onto I-680. By the time a Safeway employee called the authorities, officers in pursuit of the suspects in the highway.
Due to the high speeds during the chase, the suspect nearly smashed into a pole after losing control of the vehicle while attempting to exit the freeway.
When the car had come to a stop both suspects fled from the scene, but they were quickly found once officers created a perimeter with police dogs.
The suspects were later identified as Demarko Luke, 21, of Oakland and Dejan Martin, 27, of San Leandro.
Officers found the two Safeway baskets filled with Enfamil baby formula when they entered the vehicle. When the rest of the vehicle was searched officers discovered that the trunk was filled with more baby formula that authorities came from other stores.
Both suspects are facing several felony counts such as theft and evading arrest. Once they were arrested the male and female suspects were booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
