Job Summary

Play an important role in the health of Minnesotans by becoming a Research Scientist 2 in the Center for Health Promotion (CHP) at the Minnesota Department of Health. CHP seeks a Research Scientist 2 to be a Chronic Disease Evaluator for initiatives focused on asthma and respiratory health, oral health and chronic disease. CHP partners with local community organizations, health systems, local and tribal health, and other partners to implement strategies to improve community health outcomes. Responsibilities of the position include by are not limited to:
  • Designing process and outcome evaluation plans to assess the impact of public health initiatives.
  • Collecting data, analyzing primary and secondary data.
  • Preparing reports and disseminating findings for communities, partners, legislators, funders and the agency.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders and team members.

Work may be conducted in-person in St. Paul, or as telework for applicants who reside in MN, IA, WI, ND, or SD, based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion. Position location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of the closest MDH office location: Bemidji, Duluth, Fergus Falls, Marshall, Rochester, St. Cloud, or St. Paul. Attendance to in person quarterly meetings in St. Paul is required and there may be additional periodic requirements in office based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience in health-related research design and data evaluation. Experience in health-related research design and data evaluation to include two or more of the following:
  • Planning
  • Implementing
  • Reporting
A degree in public health, epidemiology, environmental health, psychology, sociology, biostatistics, or a closely related field may substitute for experience as described above:
  • Bachelor's = 12 months.
  • Master's = 18 months.
  • Doctorate = 24 months
Abilities to be assessed at interview:
  • Ability to work independently and manage time, workload, and priorities without day-to-day supervision of activities.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate scientific literature, synthesize relevant information, and make recommendations.
  • Knowledge of health equity and key related concepts such as health disparities, health inequity, structural inequities, and structural racism.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with asthma, oral health, or other chronic diseases.
  • Experience presenting evaluation and research results clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience creating data visualizations that clearly convey trends to the intended audience.
  • Ability to facilitate decision-making and achieve consensus on controversial issues.
  • Experience assessing program design and logic/theory, process evaluation, outcome evaluation, or assessment of cost and efficiency.
Additional Requirements
  • Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
  • This employment does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand occasional travel, which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
  • The successful candidate under U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services regulations must be able to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins. The agency is unable to offer H-1B sponsorship.
