CHP Shot in Humboldt County

On Sunday the 1st Eureka police and Humboldt County Sheriffs received reports of a shooting involving a California Highway Patrol Officer. The surrounding law enforcement agencies quickly responded to aid the officer around the 4th a ‘Q’ street area of Eureka.
The first officers to arrive on the scene witnessed one man face down in the street and a wounded California Highway Patrolman. He had been shot in the leg and was holding the remaining passengers of the car at gunpoint awaiting support. The arriving law enforcement agencies were able to secure the scene, safely move the wounded officer to be taken to a hospital, and detain any possible suspects.
According to reports the CHP officer was attempting to make a traffic stop when the driver of the vehicle he was attempting to pull over rushed out into the street. He was armed with a handgun and immediately started discharging his weapon. It was then that the officer was shot in the leg and fell to the ground. He was then able to return fire and strike down the shooter.
The suspect sustained severe wounds and later succumbed to his injuries. A total of four people were detained and the CHP officer was transported to a local hospital. He did not sustain life-threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover.
Humboldt County Incident Response Team and the Humboldt County District Attorneys Office are continuing to investigate this case along with the Humboldt County Drug Task Force.
